Complications of artificial knee joint
All surgical interventions knees are at risk of complications. Even these complications is not typical for this type of surgery such as complications of anesthesia, complications due to old age, and complications from the disease…Need to make the overall preoperative examination to know and assess the risks aim to limit the power of a bad lot can happen.
We only mention some complications related to surgery. Complications can arrive early during surgery, can follow a few days after surgery, and may later a few months or a few years.
- Complications in surgery: Very rare, such as lesions in lower limb arteries (ankle arteries) or nervous (especially nerve of fibula) with difficult cases. It is also possible broken femur, tibia or flakes the grip of extensor tendon system (patellar tendon) or quadriceps tendon rupture.
- Early complications: the dominant is infection. Infection is a risk of all surgeries. The infectious complications in knee are worse, but this complication is very rare. We should subscribe to detect early infection. The first few weeks after surgery, there are some signs of pain, fever, knee swelling, appearing fluid from the incision…Need to bacterial culture and antimicrobial susceptibility to treat antibiotic accordingly. However, status was not cured yet, need still to monitor the evolution of the infection, in fact must be reopened to clean knee. With aggressive treatment as above, patients usually overcome the infection.
Embolism: The formation of blood clots in the veins and it can be solved with prophylactic anticoagulant therapy. This complication can lead to very serious risks such as pulmonary embolism.
Hematoma in the knee: anticoagulant therapy is needed but it is favorable condition for hematoma in the knee. In this case, we need operate again to remove the hematoma.
Minimum nursing neuromuscular syndrome, very rare: it makes knee stiff early in collaboration with pain and swelling. It should be treated with medication in a relatively long time.
Knee stiffness: stiff knee can be seen after the intervention in the knee joint, especially after joint replacement, caused by a combination of many factors: pain after surgery makes difficulty in practice, inflammatory reaction in the knee, after hematoma in the joints. Movement forced knee “joint folding” under general anesthesia significantly improve movement amplitude as well as pain relief for patients. This is a small manipulation, only folding the foot of patient is too enough to break the adhesive components in joints. This designation should be announce soon after surgery, should not be too long, the ligaments will adhere together and it is very difficult to practice.
Late infection: is very rare. It is caused by the entering of bacteria from other areas (an abscess tooth, urinary tract infections, intestinal infections). This means that the need to treat all infections in patients with artificial joints seriously. When taking with internal medical doctors, you must be stated clearly that they were joint replacement. Treatment of this late infection type usually has to change a new joint. In case of failure in replacement, the only way is making knee stiff.
Stiffness: Postoperatively a long time but undetected to “break” the joint under general anesthesia, the knee becomes very hard, causing many functional limitations. At that time, should just have a knee surgery to remove adherence (this intervention help to remove the adhesive composition in the knee)
Joint instability: No stability can occur in the entire knee replacement, ligament system was coincided while its quality is still good, the expression: no stability, kneecap sometimes dislocating out, instability between the femur and tibia…
Worn joints: This is an undesirable risk of all types of artificial joints. The risk of this complication is reducing the lifespan of the joints very much.
Liquid cement: Appearance of abnormal movement between artificial joints and bones in exposed locations, which also causes pain. This complication occurs only with the cement joints. Besides the joints do not use bone cement is biting into the outer of the joint
Fracture: Trauma can be a cause of fractures of femur, tibia, and patella, directly contact with joint replacement, sometimes breaking the artificial joint. However in some cases, there is no trauma, joint is broken due to metal fatigue.
In this article, we gave you some information about complications of artificial knee joint after operation. Patients should be careful with above signs and see doctor immediately to have some advice and also suitable treatment. After the article, we think you had a basic knowledge to overcome these problems.
